On the last day before Christmas break I sat with the third graders during Mass. Their earnest singing and responses are always heartwarming, but they were especially so that day. The gospel reading was from Matthew chronicling the genealogy of Jesus. That particular reading is rather long and chock full of exotic and unusual names, and as the reading went on, I could see that the little ones around me were getting progressively squirmier. Eventually Father Michael read Jesus’ name…”Jacob the father of Joseph, the husband of Mary. Of her was born Jesus who is called the Messiah”… which prompted the little girl standing next to me to sigh and mutter, “Finally! We made it to Jesus!

Her words stayed with me throughout the Christmas break. Although she said them with some degree of exasperation, her overriding sense of thankfulness rang out in the words. Hopefully, after all the holiday preparation and hustle and bustle faded into the background, you too were able to stand in church on Christmas and find that you, too, made it to Jesus.
