In challenging economic times, the work of non-profit organizations plays an even more important role in helping people maintain their health and get the services they need. march-of-dimes

On Saturday, April 24th in Valparaiso and Sunday, April 25th in Highland, at families and businesses throughout the Region will join together for the March for Babies to support the March of Dimes work of helping moms have full-term pregnancies and babies begin healthy lives.

Families like the Condon’s of Crown Point, the top family team of 2009, along with businesses, such as Strack and Van Til are turning out in force so that one day all babies will be born healthy, thanks to efforts of the March of Dimes.

“March for Babies is a day my whole family looks forward to,” said Jim Galligan, March for Babies Porter County committee member. “It’s an enjoyable way to teach my children about the importance of helping others. This event is dedicated to the most important members of our community, our children.”

The most urgent infant health problem in the U.S. today is premature birth. It affects more than half a million babies each year, with the number growing every day. The March of Dimes issued a Report Card on Premature Birth, giving the nation a D and Indiana a D. Babies born too soon are more likely to die or have disabilities. The March of Dimes is committed to reducing this toll by funding research to find the answers to premature birth and providing comfort and information to families who are affected

“Participating in March for Babies is an important way to support the cause of healthy babies.” Said Lisa Stacy, Ambassador Family for the Lake County March for Babies. “Whether you walk to celebrate a baby in your life or to honor one who did not survive, together we can work to prevent premature birth and other infant health problems and look forward to a day when every baby is born healthy and strong.”

The walk starts at www.marchforbabies.org. Just visit the website to get started. To sign up by phone call 1-800-244-9255.
