Help SELF School Win a Computer Lab!

ComputerTeachers and parents give students the building blocks they need to learn and grow, but sometimes they can use a little outside help. As education budgets continue to shrink nationwide, The Clorox Company’s Power A Bright Future grant program was created to help schools fund new or ongoing programs that allow children to play, create and explore.

SELF School (Special Education Learning Facility)provides special education services for students ages 3-22 from throughout Porter County. Our classrooms only have one or two computers in each classroom for student use, and many of these are several years old, approaching a point beyond practical lifespan. This means that the students have to take turns throughout the day and week, and also do not get exposed to the most current technology. We do not currently have a computer lab that our students would be able to access.

We need the community's help to win up to $50,000 in the Power A Bright Future grant program. This grant would make a difference at our school because it would provide computer technology for our students to meet their specific needs. Many students at SELF are nonverbal or have physical limitations. The computer equipment this grant would make available could provide touch screens and voice activated capabilities. The computer programs could meet the academic, social, and life skills needs of our students. A computer lab would be an asset to SELF school, and an asset to the programs we would be able to provide for our students.

After a competitive national nomination period, now it is time for our community to show its support. Help SELF win up to $50,000 by casting votes starting today! From now through Dec. 9, 2011, adults and children 13 and older can visit http://www.powerabrightfuture.com/gallery/detail/?nid=1368 to vote once a day. The program that receives the highest number of votes will be awarded the $50,000 grand-prize grant, and the next top vote-getters in the Play, Create and Explore categories respectively will each be awarded a $25,000 grant. Also new this year, Clorox’s judge panel will select one additional lucky school to win a $25,000 judge’s choice grant.

Here are four easy steps you and your readers can take to help give our kids a chance at getting a new computer lab:
