The sound of hammers meeting nails rang out in a Portage cul-de-sac on Friday as Holladay Properties grabbed their tools to assist Habitat for Humanity of Porter County with their ongoing Faith Build project.

Holladay has a history of striving to be a part of the communities in which they build. They even recently revamped their mission statement to include this key part of their culture – “Enriching lives through investment and service.”

“This type of project isn’t exactly a financial investment, but it’s an investment of our time and service,” said Amanda Watson, Marketing Director for Holladay Properties. “We are just so supportive of all our associates getting out and involved in the community in any way that they want, whether it be something like Habitat for Humanity or whatever their personal missions are.”

Jessica Vargas, a Project Architect for Holladay Properties, is on the board for Habitat for Humanity of Porter County, and coordinated Holladay’s participation in the Build. Vargas has been serving on the Habitat Board for three years and saw this as an opportunity to engage in the community and help provide a home for a family.

“I recruited my office to come out and help with a build day,” Vargas said. “This home is slated to go to a single mother with four children.”

Tim Healy, Holladay’s new COO, has challenged employees to serve with purpose and affect people’s lives.

“This just seemed to fit perfectly with this goal,” Vargas said.

Habitat for Humanity families are always hard workers and take part in the build themselves. Getting an affordable home is a life changing event.

“All the homes that we build are for struggling, working families that are just making their month-to-month payments and bills,” said Kimberly May, Volunteer Coordinator for Habitat for Humanity of Porter County. “We’re putting them into a situation where they’re able to access affordable homeownership and live more comfortably

The Faith Build broke ground in August 2019 with a completion deadline of December 2019, but thanks to the efforts of the Habitat team and volunteers from companies such as Holladay, they are ahead of schedule!

“The projection is that it’ll be done by the end of November,” said May. “The only way we’re able to build a home is through volunteers and generous sponsors, like Holladay Properties, that help with the funding.”

The Faith Build is a grant program offered by Thrivent Financial that offers to match funds from local Christian organizations, which include monetary and in-kind donations. Some participating Faith Build Partners include the Immanuel Lutheran Church, GracePoint, Calvary Church, Liberty Bible Church, and Saint Helen’s Church in Hebron.
