Homelessness From a Firsthand View

housing-opportunitiesRecently, one of our clients wrote a letter to us explaining how it felt to be homeless, and her words were astonishing to me. When I read it this morning, I couldn't help feeling remarkably blessed to have what I have. Because so many of you are connected to Housing Opportunities and the work that we do, I thought I would share. For those of you that support Housing Opportunities with your time, talent or treasure, THANK YOU for making positive outcomes for our clients. Everyone have a blessed day!

Her words describing what it is like to be homeless:

"There are a myriad of thoughts and emotions surrounding that. It's difficult to not feel abandoned, unloved, lonely, and quite frankly, useless. There is fear, frustration and even anger, especially when one is told time and again that you are "not a priority," only those with children can get any kind of help, even with basic needs such as food. Being single and homeless is beyond description. After a while, you start to feel less than human, a drain upon society, looked down upon as if this is a choice, and wonder if life is actually worth living.

I was one of the lucky ones to have Housing Opportunities "come to my rescue." Without the kindness and compassion of all of the Staff, I truly don't know where or if I would be. These folks have raised me up through counseling, the Food Pantry, donations from wonderful people in the community. My self esteem got quite a boost! I have made some connections that have allowed me to become much more self sufficient, feel good about myself for the first time in a long time, and can stand up and say "I am SOMEONE!"

Without a doubt, Housing Opportunities, and in particular Jan Jones, have made so many things possible. I am now in Transitional Housing, have a part time job, and am getting back on my feet. I have people in my life that love, support, and accept me.

I don't know how I will be able to thank Housing Opportunities for putting a roof over my head and helping me move forward. THANK YOU!!!!"
