Hummel Named A Candidate For Lowe’s Senior CLASS Award

Purdue senior forward Robbie Hummel has been selected as one of just 30 men’s candidates from across the nation for the 2012 Lowe’s Senior CLASS Award, the corporation announced on Friday.

To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must be classified as an NCAA Division I senior and have notable achievements in four areas of excellence – community, classroom, character and competition. An acronym for “Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School,” the Lowe’s Senior CLASS Award focuses on the total student-athlete and encourages students to use their platform in athletics to make a positive impact as leaders in their communities.

A 2011 Preseason All-Big Ten selection, Hummel heads into the season with career averages of 13.0 points and 6.6 rebounds per game. The Valparaiso, Ind., native has made 144 three-point field goals, and has the opportunity to become the fifth Boilermaker to reach 200 for his career.

Hummel is a three-time All-Big Ten selection, earning first-team honors in 2008 and 2010, and was named an All-American by both the National Association of Basketball Coaches and the Associated Press as a junior.

He led all players with 18 points, while sharing game-high honors with seven rebounds, in just 15 minutes of action in the Boilermakers’ exhibition opener against Northern State on Tuesday.

Hummel is the third Boilermaker in as many seasons to be named a candidate for the Lowe’s Senior CLASS Award. Former Purdue stars Chris Kramer and E’Twaun Moore were named national finalists for the award in 2010 and 2011, respectively, and represented Purdue at the Final Four in each of the last two seasons as part of the awards ceremony.

The candidate list will be narrowed to 10 finalists midway through the regular season, with those names comprising the official ballot. Ballots will be distributed through a nationwide voting system to media, coaches and fans, who will select one finalist who best exemplifies the award’s criteria.

Lowe’s, an official corporate partner of the NCAA, will announce the winner of the Senior CLASS Award at the 2012 NCAA Men’s Final Four in New Orleans.
