Hundreds Brave the Ghoulish Wheather for 2014 Monster Dash

The ghoulish weather couldn't deter the 200 registered runners in downtown Valparaiso on Saturday at the 2nd Annual Valpo Parks Department Monster Dash. Although the sky was gray and the rain fell, it didn't dampen the spirit of the many costumed runners as the participants started and finished the race with smiles.

This was the goal for Phil Blasko, Valpo Parks Department Recreation Superintendent, who along with his wife and daughter participated in the race. "It's great to see all the families participating and having fun," said Blasko. The event held 2 races, a 1K Family Fun Run which saw families of all ages competing, followed by a 5K run.

As each child participant crossed the finish line in the Fun Run, they were met by Dan McGuire, Valpo Parks Department Director of Projects and Special Events, and presented with a ribbon and prize. "The Monster Dash 1K is a fun way for families to get out and be "fit" together during the months when things start slowing down outside and the weather may not be the best," said McGuire. "The bonus is that the whole family can dress up in their favorite costume to do the run in!"

The event was in conjunction with the Valpo Fit City Challenge Fit Fest. The Fit City Fit Fest is a chance to meet all the fitness centers that are participating in this years Fit City Challenge membership pass. For $25, folks will have access or be given special offers for 7 area fitness locations for 8 weeks (November 3rd - December 31st). Many fitness centers had booths represented.

Sponsors for the event were Urschel Laboratories, Porter Regional Hospital, and Extra Mile Fitness Company.
