I Have a Confession to Make

“…through my fault,
Through my fault,
Through my most grievous fault”
—Confiteor (Penitential Act, Form A)

After months of preparation, the new translation of the Mass was finally implemented! Most parishioners were able to follow along with the use of handy-dandy pew cards. Some of the wording seemed clumsy and some flowed beautifully. The congregation, myself included, managed to stay with it and after a few slip-ups and stumblings we made it to the conclusion of the Mass to be dismissed with “Go in Peace.”

One of the changes that stuck me most was the wording of the Confiteor and the repetition of the “through my fault”. This repetition makes you stop and think about how your sins are results of your own doing, through your own faults. Ownership of our sins is placed squarely at our feet and then we ask for Mary, all the Angels and Saints and all our brothers and sisters to pray for us.

It’s humbling to acknowledge one’s sins and shortcomings; and it is even more humbling to ask for forgiveness and prayers from others. But it is also so liberating; a true act of renewal. This Saturday, our second grade students will be celebrating their First Reconciliation. Even these little ones have some shortcomings for which they will be asking forgiveness. They will humble themselves before God and ask for a healing of their souls. They will come forth from the Reconciliation room with light hearts and smiling faces, and we will pray for them.

Congratulations to the following students as they ready themselves and open their hearts to receiving the gift of grace as they make their first reconciliation this weekend.
