I Wouldn’t Say People on Facebook are Losers

In case you missed it, Betty White had an awesome monologue on last weekend’s Saturday Night Live. For those of you that do not know the story of how she was selected to host SNL, it all started with a Facebook page that spread like wildfire and resulted in over a half-million people becoming a fan of that page, Loren Michaels deciding to capitalize on the buzz, and ended up with a great host in a bunch of different funny skits, a great show that brought back many of the recent stars like Amy Poeller and Tina Fey and Rachel Dratch, and an all around good time. At 88 she had no idea what Facebook was before the campaign started, and because of it she was nice enough to note “I wouldn’t say people on Facebook are losers.”

It is also a great reminder of the power of social networking and how it is impacting our media in a growing way on a day by day basis. It is not the cure to cancer, and it sure does not dry out Nashville or stop the spread of violence, but it sure can spread ideas pretty fast and needs to be recognized as a force that people communicate with, whether businesses themselves like it or not.  Betty was very thankful for “being here tonight because you wanted me to be”. Even Betty learned, and “now that I do know what it is, is sounds like a huge waste of time”.

What goofy idea do you think could spread on social Networks like Facebook and Twitter and LinkedIn ? What are the Losers that you know talking about on Facebook?
