Indiana Collegiate Press Assn. Recognizes Purdue Northwest Student Newspaper & Staff with 12 Awards

Purdue-Northwest-colorThe student newspaper of Purdue University Northwest’s Calumet Campus and its staff earned 12 awards, including three 1st places, at the recent 2015-16 Indiana Collegiate Press Association (ICPA) recognition program.

The PNW Calumet newspaper, The Chronicle, competed in the ICPA’s Newspaper Division II, based on college/university enrollment.

Editor-in-Chief Jacob Yothment of Schererville took 1sts for Best Breaking News Story and Best Opinion Column. Cartoonist Amer Abasi of Munster also received 1st place for Best Editorial Cartoon. The awards represent the first time The Chronicle has gained top honors in a category since 2004.

Earning 2nd places were: news editor Amanda Lopez of Calumet City, Ill. in categories of Best Entertainment and Best Sports Feature Stories. Other 2nds went to managing editor Dune Lorenz of Hammond, Best Staff Editorial; former production manager Elizabeth Biancardi of Griffith, designer Matthew Staton of Schererville, former photo editor Rilee Witt of Lowell and Yothment for Best Feature Page; and photographer Ali Bauer of Munster, Best Sports Photo.

Third place recognition went to Yothment, Best Entertainment Story; sports editor Cain Buchmeier of Hobart, former news editor Ashley Peterson of Hammond and Yothment, Best Continuous Coverage of a Single Issue; and the entire staff in the Best Single Issue and Newspaper of the Year categories.

With recent approval by the Higher Learning Commission, Purdue University Calumet and Purdue University North Central have unified to become Purdue University Northwest (PNW), a comprehensive regional university within the Purdue University system. PNW, which welcomes its first class of students this fall, will become Indiana’s fifth largest public university, enrolling more than 15,000 students and offering 70+ degree programs.
