Indiana University Northwest One Book program hosts regional author David Masciotra

Gary, Ind. – One Book…One Campus…One Community, IU Northwest’s reading program that is intended to build an intellectual and social rapport among students, staff, faculty, and community members, will kick off its fall event showcase from 4 - 5:30 p.m., Thursday, October 7 with a series led by David Masciotra, an IU Northwest lecturer and author of “I Am Somebody: Why Jesse Jackson Matters.”

Masciotra will host a discussion addressing the themes in "Blindspot: Hidden Biases of Good People" this year’s One Book selection.

In exploring why Jesse Jackson matters in his latest book, Masciotra suggests the neglect and underestimation of Jackson’s role as an organizer, negotiator, and politician is misleading of his ongoing campaigns for civils rights and economic justice.

Masciotra teaches courses in writing and literature at IU Northwest, as well as Saint Francis University in Joliet, Ill. He is a frequent contributor to a range of publications, including “LA Review of Books,” “No Depression,” “Crime Reads” and several others, and is regular columnist on Salon.com.

“I Am Somebody” is Masciotra’s fifth book, following books on John Mellencamp, Bruce Springsteen, Metallica, and Barack Obama.

This event is free and open to the public and can be attended in person or via Zoom. To learn more on how to attend this event and other upcoming One Book events, visit: iun.edu/onebook/events/.
