This week at Industrial Revolution, help us celebrate Sylvester Roper (1823-1896).
Sylvester Howard Roper was an American Inventor and engineer who was responsible for making several improvements to Americans lives. Some of his patents were for the padlock, knitting machine improvements, metal screw machine, fire escape, revolving firearms, the shotgun choke, one of the first steam carriages, etc.

Roper will probably be most remembered for inventing the very first steam powered velocipede or “motorcycle” in 1867. Roper never had commercial success with this invention, but did pave the way for others to make improvements to this new machine and turn into a symbol of American Freedom and Independence…
