"Father of Concrete Pavement"

George Bartholomew was an American inventor credited with the invention of concrete pavement. In 1886, he moved to Bellefontaine Ohio after learning about concrete production. He found there was a good source of limestone and clay in this area and from this was looking to create an artificial stone that could be used for paving. George founded the "Buckeye Portland Cement Company" and set out to develop a new cement for pavement. In 1891 the city council of Bellefontaine approved a test use of this material on a town's main street. The experiment proved successful and went on to pave more roads. Bartholomew's technique received awards and its use was quickly adopted throughout the United States and internationally
