International Subaru of Merrillville spread a little warmth to the students at South Haven Elementary School on a cold Monday morning. Sales consultants Nick Ferguson and Chris Smith Jr. stopped by to drop off several boxes comprising 150 books, as a donation to the school’s library.

At the beginning of the school year, South Haven Elementary had to shut its doors for three weeks due to mold contamination. Placing the health and safety of their students first and foremost, school officials thoroughly eradicated the contaminant before allowing students back on the premises to continue their learning.

Unfortunately, the school’s library/media center took a huge hit.

All the books (as well as the carpet) were damaged by mold. Rather than risk any further threat to students, the school did away with all materials within the media center. While the chance to create a new center is exciting, the loss of all the books made for a disappointing start to the year.

Enter International Subaru of Merrillville. The donation was a welcome start to the week. Principal Misecko and staff members gathered around the boxes, admiring the colorful children’s books they revealed.

“This is just us trying to give back,” Ferguson said earnestly. “This is our part to give back to the community.”

As part of the Subaru Love Promise, a company-wide initiative to partner with nonprofits and donate to charitable causes for the greater good of society, International Subaru of Merrillville has continually worked to “Share the Love” through many generous contributions.

The dealership recently received the 2018 Subaru Love Promise Customer Commitment Award for exhibiting excellence in customer-focused performance and community involvement. Through the award and endeavors such as the book donation to South Haven Elementary School, the International Subaru of Merrillville team upholds their commitment to sharing love in their community and making a positive impact in the world.

“This is just what Subaru is known for: giving back to the environment and to people,” Ferguson said. “We’re all about taking care of everybody. This just another small way for us to show that we care.”
