Linda Galocy recognized by The Times and BusINess magazine 
On Thursday, Sept. 23, Linda Galocy, an Indiana University Northwest faculty member, was recognized by The Northwest Indiana Times and BusINess magazine as a recipient of the ‘20 Under 40’ award. Galocy is a lecturer and clinical coordinator for the College of Health and Human Services’ Health Information Management program.
The Times and BusINess magazine’s ‘20 Under 40’ award is an annual program to identify and honor individuals demonstrating outstanding leadership and those who have already become key players in the growth and development of Northwest Indiana.
Galocy was nominated for the prestigious award by her supervisor, Professor Margaret Skurka, and also by her husband, Matt.
Galocy cited her dedication to her profession as one likely reason she was named for the “20 Under 40” honor.
“I take a lot of time to give back to the profession, and to the professional community,” Galocy said. “I’m currently president-elect for our state association, IHIMA (Indiana Health Information Management Association).”
In her day-to-day role at the university, Galocy is responsible for coordinating professional practice experience for IU Northwest health information technology students. She has worked with all of the local hospitals coordinating direct on-site experience for the students and is also responsible for organizing a variety of lab work in the classrooms and in the department’s computer lab.
“The students get real-world experience to prepare them for their future,” Galocy said. “They learn the applications of the coding process from real patients’ records, data analysis using real-life data, and work with electronic health record programs.”
Galocy emphasized that she was honored and shocked by her receipt of the award.
“When I look back at all I’ve been involved in, it overwhelms me,” Galocy joked.
“But I really enjoy what I do and I think it’s important to not just do your job but to get involved and to help shape your profession,” she added. “If I am going to be doing this for the next 30 years, I want to be enjoying what I’m doing.”
The widely respected ’20 Under 40’ award is designed to encourage young entrepreneurs, business owners and those who serve in government and non-profit sectors to develop their potential, reinforce their values and become role models for others.
