IU Northwest to Celebrate Black History Month

rot4Free performances, discussions and movies throughout February

In recognition of Black History Month, celebrated during February, Indiana University Northwest invites the campus, and community, to participate in this annual observance through the following free events and opportunities:

February 5: Screening of “The Abolitionists”
6 p.m.
Bruce W. Bergland Auditorium, Savannah Center

A small group of moral reformers in the 1830s launched one of the most ambitious social movements imaginable: the immediate emancipation of millions of African-Americans held in bondage, at a time when slavery was one of the most powerful economic and political forces in the United States.

February 12: Wirt/Emerson Concert Choir and Dance Performance
6 p.m.
Bruce W. Bergland Auditorium, Savannah Center

A musical performance and dance recital based upon the civil rights struggle performed by the Wirt/Emerson Concert Choir and Dance Department from the School of Visual and Performing Arts, located in Gary.

The event is sponsored by the Department of Minority Studies and African-American Studies.

February 19: Screening of “Slavery by Another Name”
6 p.m.
Bruce W. Bergland Auditorium, Savannah Center

Even as slavery ended in the South after the Civil War, new forms of forced labor kept thousands of African-Americans in bondage until the onset of World War II. This film is based on the 2008 Pulitzer Prize-winning book of the same title by Douglas Blackmon.

February 26: Screening of “The Freedom Riders”
6 p.m.
Bruce W. Bergland Auditorium, Savannah Center

The Freedom Rides of 1961 were a pivotal moment in the long Civil Rights struggle that redefined America. Based on Raymond Arsenault’s recent book, this documentary film offers an inside look at the brave band of activists who challenged segregation in the Deep South.

All movie screenings are funded by a grant by the National Endowment for the Humanities and The Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History, and are co-sponsored by the Office of Diversity, Equity and Multicultural Affairs, and the Department of Minority Studies and African-American Studies.

The Savannah Center is located at 33rd Ave. and Broadway in Gary. The John W. Anderson Library/Conference Center is located near 35th Ave. and Broadway.
