Writer and actor Michael Fosberg to perform his story of finding his biological father, discovering he is African-American
Indiana University Northwest will celebrate the Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday with a presentation of “Incognito” by Michael Sidney Fosberg, scheduled for 6 p.m., Wednesday, Jan. 22 in the Bruce W. Bergland Auditorium, located in the Savannah Center. The production is open to the campus and community at no-charge.
Raised in a working-class Caucasian family in a Chicago suburb, Fosberg discovered at the age of 34 that his biological father is African-American.
“Incognito” is Fosberg’s journey to uncover and discover himself, his roots, his family, and the difficult history behind the American complexity of "race".
“Not only did I develop a new, more comfortable relationship with my sense of identity, but I also uncovered a rich, black heritage,” Fosberg said, according to his website. “This life-changing revelation, the connections I made with my "new" paternal family, and the questions that my new-found identity raised in relationship to how we perceive race in America, inspired me to create my one-man play, ‘Incognito’ in 2001.”
Since 2001, Fosberg has performed “Incognito” throughout the country, inviting audiences to question and discuss their thoughts on race and identity. “Incognito” has been performed at art venues, educational institutions, corporations and government agencies, including Northwestern University, Penn State, the Sundance Institute, NASA, the FBI, the U.S. Attorney's Office, the Social Security Administration, and the Black Academy of Arts & Letters.
