Ivy Tech Northwest Begins Transportation, Distribution and Logistics Training

Ivy Tech Northwest begins offering courses in one of the fastest growing industries in northwest Indiana through its Center for Transportation, Distribution and Logistics at the Gary campus.  The first section of the courses will run October through December 2009.  Four additional sections will run in 2010.  Each section will focus on the management of freight transportation, domestic and international trucking, ocean/maritime, air cargo, railroad, intermodal, and parcel express freight movements. Students attending classes will receive free tuition and fees through a $381,000 grant made possible from the U.S. Department of Education beginning August 1, 2009 to July 31, 2010.

The Center will provide training for the commercial driver’s license (CDL), certified logistics associate (CLA), certified logistics technician (CLT) and certified production technician (CPT) areas Students will be awarded certifications depending on the successful completion of course work and the national certification exam.  Certification exam fees will be paid from the grant.

Bill Thon, executive director of Workforce and Economic Development for Ivy Tech Northwest, said  CDL training will begin October 5 from 8 – 4 p.m., Monday through Friday for four weeks; CLA training will begin October 19 from 5 to 9 p.m., Tuesday through Thursday for three weeks; CLT training will begin November 23 from 5 to 9 p.m., Tuesday through Thursday for two weeks; and CPT training will begin December 7 from 5 – 9 p.m., Monday through Thursday for 12 week.
