JC Penney Donation Benefits Families in Our Community

At the Y we are committed to strengthening our community and to help ensure kids have what they need to succeed. Earlier this year JC Penney "paired up" by inviting customers to participate in a special buy one, give one promotion that will provide kids in-need with basic undergarments. From Aug. 1-15, for every pack of kids' socks and underwear sold at JC Penney, the retailer donated a pack to the YMCA.

"Today, many children go to school without basic clothing needs like socks and underwear. When kids don't have these items, they often feel insecure, embarrassed and don't want to fully engage in school activities," said Marci Grebstein, chief marketing officer for JC Penney.

Children in the Y’s preschool program, and families who receive financial assistance will be receiving the undergarments and socks during the holiday season.

"Our staff works with families who depend on preschool scholarships provided by the Annual Campaign. Providing basic supplies as well as socks and underwear can affect how the children build confidence and will help them reach their fullest potential," said Diane Sonnenberg, Child Care Director.

This fall, the Togetherhood Initiative, a volunteer-lead service group, provided locations for clothing donations to Lotus Wellness Collective, a community center that offers healing modalities and education. The generous clothing donations provided by the Y members will include items from the JC Penney undergarments for children in need.

In addition to supporting the Y through the Pair Up program, the Valparaiso JC Penney provided assistance earlier this year for our Shoe Drive which helped raise $1,600 for LIVESTRONG at the YMCA helping cancer warriors regain their health with funds from donations to our Annual Campaign.

Thank you to all the volunteers, donors and JC Penney for bringing smiles and hope to families in need.
