Join the South Shore Orchestra As They Explore Egyptian Culture

South Shore Orchestra to perform Egyptian music saturated with culture and exotic sound while honoring lifetime achievement of extraordinary composer and musicologist

Friday, June 3 at VUCA (Valparaiso University Center for the Arts) at 7 PM

Join sixty of your community musicians who share a love for performance of fine music and the opportunity to share it with those who want to learn more about culture and the world through music, in their season debut. Combine their personal commitment with a conductor who envisions enabling and orchestrating a musical community through the richness and diversity of music, and you get the formula that has developed this small ensemble group in its infancy to the globally sophisticated group that it has become in six short but intense years.

Since mid April, musicians have rehearsed weekly at Trinity Lutheran Church in Valparaiso, the challenging and exotic music of Halim El-Dabh, a cultural icon in Egyptian classical music. El-Dabh has composed the scores for the Sound and Light Show at the Sphinx and Giza Pyramid. Maestro Troy Webdell was inspired by his contributions to the world of music and as a part of SSO’s Global Expressions theme for this year, designed a program that will blend the uniqueness of the ancient culture with the excitement of his contemporary approach. Webdell will continue to immerse the audience with the flavor of the Middle East with the narrative of Arabian Nights, Scheherazade and a lively Belly Dance Classic. This performance will deliver an evening of rich, diverse, authentic and exciting music. El-Dabh will attend the concert and be honored by SSO with a lifetime achievement award. A free dessert reception after the concert will continue the celebration at Pikk’s Tavern in Valparaiso.

You can purchase tickets at the door previous to the 7:00 pm concert at Valparaiso Center for the Arts (VUCA) on VU campus. Or purchase tickets at Pikk’s Tavern in Valparaiso, where you can also enjoy a pre-concert dinner with a 10% discount. Ticket cost is $15 or $10 for Seniors/Students with ID. All funds go to the support of the organization and their educational mission.

Global Expressions will continue when South Shore Orchestra performs THE COMING OF LIGHT, an Alan Hovhaness Centennial Celebration, on Friday October, 21 at Ivy Tech Auditorium and in December when they embark on their second invitational tour of China, guests of the Confucius Institute.
