Last 2019 hazardous waste collection set for Oct. 12

Porter County, Indiana – Porter County residents have one last chance this year to properly dispose of their old and unused pesticides, gasoline, and other household products that contain corrosive, toxic, ignitable or reactive ingredients.

The final household hazardous waste (HHW) collection event of 2019, sponsored by Porter County Recycling & Waste Reduction, is scheduled from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 12, at the Porter County Expo Center, 215 E. Division Rd., Valparaiso. Attendees should enter Gate 3. Unlike the first collection of this year, only household hazardous waste will be accepted; no tires will be collected.

Examples of acceptable HHW products include aerosols; anti-freeze; oil; batteries (household and automotive); corrosives; mercury containing products (fluorescent tubes, CFLs, thermometers, thermostats, etc.); oil-based paint, thinners and solvents; pesticides, fungicides, herbicides, insecticides and other poisons; diesel fuel, gasoline, kerosene, other flammable liquids; ammunition, smoke detectors and expired medications.

Controlled medications, compressed gas cylinders, latex paint, medical waste, asbestos, grill propane cylinders, commercial hazardous waste, containers larger than five gallons, and explosives will not be accepted.

There are alternate locations available that accept old/unused medications, fluorescent light bulbs, and household batteries, so residents do not have to attend a collection to properly dispose of these products. These locations are listed on the Porter County Recycling website.
