Lerner & Rowe Gives Back has been around for 10 years and shows no signs of halting contributions to surrounding communities, especially in the face of COVID. It was founded by Kevin Rowe of Lerner & Rowe Injury Attorneys as a way to get involved in the communities they serve.
For the last five years, Lerner & Rowe Gives Back invited the community to receive backpacks and school supplies for children in kindergarten through high school.
“This is an event that we do every single year. We typically do it in multiple areas where our offices are located. It’s just a good way to give back to the community and kind of take the stress off of parents,” said Arianna Baiz, Outreach Director. “Back-to-school time can be a little stressful between buying new school supplies, buying new clothes, and everything else you need to do to prepare for the school year. We are giving them one less thing to worry about with the backpack and school supplies giveaway.”
This year, the event will take place on August 15 from 8-11 a.m. at Hidden Lake Park in Merrillville, and Noon – 3 p.m. at Richard J. Daley Elementary Academy in Chicago.
Normally, Lerner & Rowe Gives Back has a celebration with food, popsicles, music, and face painting, but due to COVID, this year’s event will operate as a drive-through where members of the community will have their vehicles loaded with backpacks and supplies.
“We weren’t sure at first with COVID if this was something we were going to be able to do. We sat down and discussed the fact that now is the best time for us to do it. Now more than ever there’s this need with a lot of parents being out of work or having hours cut. We decided to go ahead and do it and just style it a little bit differently,” Baiz said.
To help keep the community safe and healthy, event volunteers are encouraging those who attend to wear masks and remain in their vehicles for the duration of the event.
Lerner & Rowe values the event as a staple in their communities that the towns, schools, parents, children, and teachers can look forward to every year.
“It’s also rewarding because we get our staff out there. They really love it, too. A couple of weeks beforehand, we have an assembly line in our offices. We all get together and put all the backpacks and school supplies together,” Baiz said. “Everybody on our team has the heart to give back. We’re constantly looking for ways that we can serve the community and help people in their time of need.”
Lerner & Rowe Gives Back works with the local school districts, asking for a school supply list for different schools and different ages to ensure children get the supplies they need.
“We actually purchase them outright. We purchase supplies and have them delivered to the office. We put them together ourselves. This is all funded by Lerner and Rowe Injury Attorneys,” Baiz said.
If you are a parent of school-age children or know someone who would benefit from free backpacks and school supplies, keep this event on your radar! For any questions about the event, please contact Arianna Baiz at email@example.com or visit lernerandrowe.com.
