Links of the Week: Sports’ Best Beards, North Korea, and What Happens When You Send an iPhone to Space?

I couldn't be happier the NBA season began this week. Finally, a Chicago team I don't have to be frustrated while watching!

Derrick Rose looks awesome this year, and I like the fast-paced approach the team took in it's first game against the Thunder. Noah and Gibson look like they'll have a good time controlling rebounds, and I'm just excited for when the team gets Carlos Boozer healthy and on the court. Here are four games I'm especially looking forward to before the All Star Break:

  1. November 5th, "The Old Guard": Bulls at Boston Celtics: The Bulls are facing off against the Old Guard Boston Celtics, whose starting five have ages of Rajon Rondo (24), then Ray Allen (35), Paul Pierce (33), Kevin Garnett (34), and Shaquielle O'Neal (38). Plus, Bulls-Celtics have formed a quiet little rivalry over the past few years.
  2. December 1st , "The Big Debut": Bulls vs. Magic - The Bulls will face off against the Magic in what is expected to be Carlos Boozer's debut with the Bulls, coming off a hand injury that has sidelined him for the start of the season.
  3. December 25th: "The Christmas Day Game": Bulls - Knicks - There's just soemthing special in the air everytime the Bulls and the Knicks face off in Madison Square Garden. The only thing more special is watching the game while stuffing my face with turkey.
  4. January 15th: "The New World Order": Bulls vs.Miami: The Bulls don't have to face off against the nWo Heat until January 15th, so by then we'll have a good idea of how well James, Wade, and Bosh will play together and how good the Rose-Boozer combo will be.

And, without further ado, your Links of the Week:

The More You Know: Don't go out on Black Friday and spend the week in the freezing cold! Adweek says most of the good deals can be had online that day. [Adweek]

They say that flash memory can be 10,000 times faster in the next few years. That means whatever you do on your phone can be done 10,000 times faster. However long your longest wait for your mp3 player to load will take 10,000 times fewer minutes. Whatever wait time your iPad or tablet whatever takes... okay you get the point. My only question: is the difference between "a few seconds" and "1/10,000 of a few seconds" really that much? [Gizmodo]

Which actor gives you the biggest bang for your buck, meaning, which actor's movies gross the most per dollar he gets paid? Shia LaBeouf. The least bang for the buck? Vincent Gallo? Not really, but I feel like it should be Vincent Gallo. [JoBlo.com]

Everything you could possibly want to know (and/or everything you did not want to know) about the 'hipster' fad. My favorite quote: [NYMag.com]

"The hipster moment did not produce artists, but tattoo artists. It did not yield a great literature, but it made good use of fonts."

Want to send your iPhone to space? There's an app for that. (Just kidding. Actually a father and son sent an iPhone into the stratosphere using a weather balloon, captured the footage on its HD camera, then found the camera once the balloon popped, sending the iPhone back to earth. This should be the next iPhone commercial.) [The Atlantic via Will Leitch's Twitter]

Boston.com's The Big Picture: the best website for cool photos? Check out these amazing photos of North Korea. (Yes, probably the first time you've read "cool" in the same sentence as "North Korea". [Boston.com]

LongReads, by far my favorite Twitter follow, just became a website. No longer will you have to suffer not having the best in long articles on the web because you aren't on Twitter. Check it out, you won't be disappointed! [LongReads]

There's some talk of Facebook adopting a new feature where you can select updates from people who you have not connected with as a friend. Some people call it the "stalker" feature, while others compare it more to Twitter. My question: why doesn't Facebook just buy out Twitter (instead of just adopting all of its' functionality)? They use the '@' feature, the lists, and now this? [Gigaom via Gizmodo]

If my wife ever leaves me for Bruno Mars (or even a really good Bruno Mars impersonator), this is why. [VodPod]
