Meals on Wheels Honors Volunteers

Meals-on-Wheels-Honors-Volunteers-1Community volunteers dedicate hundreds of hours to deliver meals to hungry seniors

On Thursday, April 25, 2013 Meals on Wheels of Northwest Indiana honored their dedicated volunteers for their commitment to the Meals on Wheels mission at the Hellenic Center in Merrillville.

The volunteers were treated to a catered lunch and awards were given to volunteers who reached milestone years. More than 30 volunteers were recognized with the Presidential award. This award is given to volunteers who gave 100 hours of their time per year. Each recipient was given a certificate, bronze pin, and letter from President Barack Obama commending them on the accomplishment.

Meals-on-Wheels-Honors-Volunteers-2Three volunteers – James Sullivan, Robert Shoemaker and Marvin Olson – earned the silver award for their contribution of more than 250 hours per year. All three gentlemen were drivers delivering meals to congregate sites and/or individual clients.

Meals on Wheels of Northwest Indiana has been delivering meals in Lake County since 1977, and are always reaching for their goal that “No senior goes hungry.” If you have any questions or would like to become a volunteer with Meals on Wheels, please contact Joan Vith, Volunteer Manager at 219-756-3663.
