Jesus Torres, the newly-promoted Floor Manager at Kelsey’s Steakhouse, grew up in Mexico his entire childhood, but moved to Valparaiso with his family when he was a teenager. Jesus attended and graduated from Valparaiso High School and is currently going to school at Purdue Northwest, where he is studying business management.
“I am taking parttime classes at Purdue Northwest while working at Kelsey’s fulltime,” said Torres.
Jesus has been with Kelsey’s Steakhouse for about 10 years and has held just about every job title in the restaurant. Since he most recent promtoion, he has been the floor manager for about 3 months now.
“I started working at Kelsey’s as a dishwasher, actually, and did that for a few months. Then I became a buser and did that for about a year. I then went behind the kitchen and did that for about two years. I was a bartender for a few years and a server for a few years, and now I am the floor manager.”
As the floor manager, Jesus makes sure everything in the restaurant is running smoothly.
“I am in charge of hiring people, keeping an eye on the inventory, ordering what needs to be ordered, and pretty much just making sure everything runs smoothly,” said Jesus.
The floor manager position is still relatively new to Jesus, but he enjoys being able to see the different perspective of working as an employee versus working as a manager.
“It is exciting to see the different perspectives from all the positions I have held. It is kind of interesting to put yourself in different positions because you see the different aspects of running a restaurant,” stated Jesus.
As the floor manager, Jesus hopes to make sure all the staff are doing their jobs while feeling welcome and having fun.
“I think it is important to keep an eye on our employees and make sure they feel welcome and are excited to work. At the end of the day we spend more time with our co-workers than our family, so we need to enjoy our time here and have fun.”
Jesus also is on top of the Kelsey's Steakhouse social media channels like Facebook and Instagram. He loves living and working in Valpo because of the friendliness of the region.
“It is a very nice and safe place to live and it is a good place to have a family. I am not a fan of the crazy weather, but at the same time is is kind of cool because you get to experience all four seasons here.”
Outside of working, Jesus enjoys playing soccer, editing videos (which you can find on YouTube at LITorresFilms channel, and working out - he is working towards getting his 2nd degree black belt in Taekwondo.
Out of all the tasty menu items to choose from at Kelsey’s Steakhouse, Jesus enjoys eating and recommends the ribeye steak.
