Mental Health America Porter County Works with Colleges & Interns in 2015

MHAPC-Works-with-Colleges-and-InternsMental Health America of Porter County is a small, non-profit organization who purpose is to promote mental wellness. We achieve this by providing advocacy, education, resource, and support services. We have been making a difference in the Porter County Community for over 60 years!

Lauren & AudienceMHAPC also works with colleges, both in and outside of Valparaiso, to develop an internship program for students and potential future providers. We work with Valparaiso University, Ivy Tech Community College, Purdue Calumet & North Central, and Indiana University Northwest & Bloomington. Interns help us run our various programs we provide. As a small non-profit they are a valuable resource to us.

During the internship, student-interns learn the ins and outs of a non-profit organization. They work with our very successful Open Door Social Club program. Open Door Social Club is offered to adults diagnosed with a mental illness and who are treatment compliant. One purpose of ODSC is to provide positive peer interactions through safe and healthy social engagements. Interns get hands on experience working adults who have been diagnosed with a mental illness. Interns learn how to plan and implement events, as well as design monthly event calendars. Other interns, work alongside staff in developing and improving our programs, recording important data, and preparing for fundraising events; such as our Antique and Collectibles Show.

Mental Health America of Porter County truly appreciates having the opportunity to work with colleges and help student-interns to prepare for their future as a provider.
