Mrs. Michelle Benson from the Porter County Soil and Water Conservation District Visits St. Paul Kindergarten Class

St-Paul-Kindergarten-Collage-04-27-15The Saint Paul Catholic School Kindergarten class was caught playing in the dirt and loving it! Mrs. Donna Shane and her students recently invited Mrs. Michelle Benson from the Porter County Soil and Water Conservation District to come and teach them about the different types of soil. What she brought was sweet-literally! The children used flour, cocoa, and other kitchen ingredients to make 'soil'.

These simple ingredients became sand, clay, and humus. "The soil smelled so yummy!" said Lilly Meeks. The children then talked about what qualities in soil make for good plant growing. "The cornmeal wouldn't roll into a ball, so it wouldn't be good for flowers," said Madelynn Stillman. The kindergarten class often invites visitors to come and enhance their science curriculum. Saint Paul Catholic School is currently enrolling for the 2015-2016 school year. Please call 462-3374 to schedule a tour or email jscupham@stpaulvalpo.org for more information.
