Multicultural Activities at Northview Elementary

Northview Elementary School has an ongoing multicultural education and outreach program. The region being highlighted this year is Central America and the specific country is Nicaragua. In the week prior to the culminating activity, the Multicultural Festival, students participate in various classroom activities as well as presentations that educate them on the region and prepare them for the culminating activity; the Multicultural Festival.

Former "Miss Nicaragua" Tania, who now lives in Chicago, will be giving presentations to our students about her homeland, Nicaragua. It will include information about the country, its geography, resources, and some of the cultural elements like basic dances. We anticipate her supporting her presentation with Nicaraguan festival attire.

February 23 is the Multicultural Festival, from 6:00 to 7:30 pm. The festival is a come and go format with various activities planned:

  • Tania’s professional dance troupe is scheduled to provide two performances (6:00 & 7:00) that illustrate cultural dances / activities for those that attend.
  • Valpo University education students will have a station providing information and activities related to their trip to Nicaragua last spring
  • Craft areas for students to create simple “central America”-type crafts (as well as the typical things like face-painting, etc)
  • Parades of students showing their Nicaraguan creations made in their art classes (6:30-7:00ish)
  • Art Show featuring student art work from the past grading period
  • Sale of food / trinkets – money collected goes to this year’s project of providing money for school supplies in a Nicaraguan school… partnering with the group of VU education students under the direction of Dr. Del Gilispi who are going to Nicaragua to work with a school over VU’s spring break.
  • K-Kids’ bake sale to raise money for Haiti relief.
