National Police Week – Honoring our Heroes

It's been 49 years since President Jon F. Kennedy signed the proclamation to designate May 15th as "Peace Officers Memorial Day" and the week it falls on as Police Week. To this day, officers continue to sacrifice their time, energy and even their lives to maintain the peace we enjoy.

The Valparaiso Police Department commemorated the event in full uniform to honor those who came before them and lost their lives in the line of duty to protect our nation, our community and its people.

"I just want to say thank you so much," said Pastor Lionel, a chaplain for the Valpo Police Department, "Thank you for working to keep our community such a safe place to live. Thank you for protecting us from those who would threaten our peace and security...and thank you for making our community a better place to live."

Valpo Mayor, Jon Costas, spoke to the Valpo Police force, recalling old stories from past officers as well as addressing the current officers, "I want you all to know how immensely, immensely proud I am of this department and each and every one of you."

He ended expressing his gratitude, "Thank you for your humility, for your courage, for your dedication and for your professionalism, because it is deeply admired and appreciated throughout our entire community. I thank you, from the bottom of my heart."
