New Fitness Programs coming in March

Our first fitness programs of 2012 have been a huge success. Most of them reached capacity, and now we are preparing for our next batch of offerings.

We have a variety of programs starting in March that are designed for people of all abilities. If the gym seems a little intimidating (or expensive), check out these outstanding (and FREE!) programs that we have to offer. And make sure to contact Sara Grassmeyer to register soon. These programs will fill up fast!

FitFest II will take place on Saturday, March 10, from 8 to 9:30 a.m. at the Sunset Hill Farm County Park Interpretive Center (next to the playground). This class is FREE and offers three workouts - Cardio, Step and Yoga - that you can take home and do on your own.

Tubular Strength also begins on March 10 and takes place every Saturday through April 7 from 9 to 9:45 a.m. at the Sunset Hill Farm Interpretive Center. Using resistance tubes and fitballs, you will learn simple, but functional exercises you can do at home or work that will challenge your fitness and strengthen your entire body.

To register, contact Sara Grassmeyer at 219-707-8281 or sgrassmeyer@porterco.org.

We also are offering a Snowshoeing Class that takes place every Saturday (weather permitting) at Sunset Hill Farm from 8 to 9 a.m. The class costs $5, which includes eqipment rental.

A Run Club also takes place every Tuesday and Thursday at the Sunset Hill Farm from 8 to 9 a.m. The club runs 5 miles or more along the trails at the park.

All of these programs take place at Sunset Hill Farm County Park.

Girls on the Run starting in March

Program teaches confidence while prepping for 5K race

Porter County Parks and Recreation is excited to offer a Girls on the Run (GOTR) program this March. It will be the first of its kind in Porter County, and is perfect for girls ages 8 to 13.

GOTR is designed for pre-teen girls. It combines positive youth development curriculum with running activities to address physical, emotional, mental and social well-being.

GOTR curriulum empowers girls to make positive decisions and avoid risky adolescent behaviors while preparing them for a 5K race that takes place in Highland on May 19.

This program will take place on Mondays and Wednesdays from March 5 to May 23, from 4 to 5:30 p.m. The cost is $85, which includes race registration and T-shirt. Wellness Coordinator Sara Grassmeyer will coach the team this year. To register, contact her at sgrassmeyer@porterco.org or 219-707-8281.

Space is very limited for this exceptional program. Register your child soon!
