New Franciscan Health Program Fit to Provide Help in Addiction Recovery

rot4Franciscan Health and The Intrepid Phoenix are excited to announce a collaboration to provide fitness services to residents of Porter and Lake counties who are recovering from drug and alcohol addictions.

The Intrepid Phoenix program launched in July 2017 in LaPorte. Since that time, the nonprofit fitness fellowship program has grown to 70 active members in La Porte and Michigan City.

The Intrepid Phoenix program combines the fellowship and unity of a 12-step program with a holistic approach to fitness in the recovery process. The program includes yoga, resistance, cardiorespiratory and core training, along with nutrition education provided by certified professionals. Program goals include lower rates of relapse, higher rates of abstinence from drugs and alcohol, improved physical fitness and improved mental/emotional health.

Since the first Franciscan Health hospital in the United States was created in 1875, Franciscan has stayed true to its founding mission of caring for everyone who comes through its doors. Patients are treated with kindness and grace that follow the guiding ethical values embodied by its founders, the Sisters of St. Francis of Perpetual Adoration. Those values are: Respect for Life, Fidelity to Mission, Compassionate Concern, Joyful Service and Christian Stewardship.

Always mindful of Christian stewardship to the Roman Catholic Church, Franciscan ministers with joy, care and compassion, according to the ideals of St. Francis of Assisi and our foundress, Blessed Maria Theresia Bonzel.

Beginning in July 2018, The Intrepid Phoenix program participants will have complete access to all fitness facilities and group exercise classes at Franciscan Health Fitness Centers in Chesterton and Schererville. Franciscan Health will also provide space for program-specific meetings and classes as needed.

"At Franciscan Health, we are called to Continue Christ’s Ministry in our Franciscan Tradition. We stay true to our mission statement by serving everyone in our communities,” said Marci Crozier, administrative director of Franciscan Health Fitness Centers. "Larry Smith and The Intrepid Phoenix share our commitment of providing life-changing care to those in need. We are thrilled to welcome The Intrepid Phoenix to Franciscan Health and to broaden the population we serve through this impactful collaboration."

"We are extremely excited about our collaboration with Franciscan Health!" added Larry Smith, executive director with The Intrepid Phoenix. "Our missions and purpose align perfectly, and we're grateful that we will now be able to serve residents in Lake and Porter counties who seek to add fitness to their existing recovery programs."
