portercountypunishersThe Porter County Punishers, a new professional basketball team putting its home in Portage, is hosting tryouts for the team at the Portage Township YMCA on September 10th. The team is looking for players from all around Porter County, including Portage, Valparaiso, Chesterton, and the surrounding area.

The tryouts, starting at noon, will be for this new professional team which was purchased in July and brought here to Porter County. Tryouts include a $75 non-refundable deposit to make sure only serious players are available.

The Porter County Punishers are one of the newest members of the ABA, a league dedicated to “bringing fast-paced, fan-friendly, exciting basketball to true fans”. The league has several interesting rules to help make the game more entertaining for fans, like the 7-second backcourt count, a four-point half court shot, and the 3-D Rule, where an additional point is added to the value of a field goal when the 3-D Light is on, among other rules.

“We’re really focused on created a fun, family-oriented environment,” said Lisa Garza, General Manager of the Punishers. “We’re looking for halftime entertainment from the Portage area, and we’re going to have a lot of fun.”
