New Recycling Boxes Make Collections Neater

new-recycling-drop-off-boxes-01Porter County residents who use the drop-off recycling boxes in the southern part of the county may have noticed a change in the boxes where they place fiber, such as paper and cardboard.

New boxes have replaced the old and worn-out containers at the following locations: Kouts, 406 S. Kouts St.; Boone Grove, 319 West 550 South; and Hebron, 125 N. Main St. The new containers are designed with limited access points to help prevent blowing and spills when emptied by the waste hauling trucks.

Some of new boxes feature long slit openings to accept flattened boxes, while others provide shorter slit openings for paper. The slits help to contain the material. All boxes have flip-up tops to drop in bundles too large to fit into the openings.

The drop-off recycling boxes that accept metal cans, plastic, and glass remain the same. A complete list of materials accepted at these sites is available on the district’s website, www.ItMeansTheWorld.org.

The Recycling and Waste Reduction District of Porter County sponsors the drop-off locations in seven locations throughout the county to give residents without curbside recycling service a place to drop off their materials.

The District’s goal is to have similar boxes at the rest of the sites. A specific time frame has not been determined at this time.

Other drop-off locations include: Burns Harbor Street Department, 310 Navajo Trail; Chesterton, 1600 Pioneer Trail (Strack & VanTil); Portage, Willowcreek Middle School, 5962 Central Ave.; and Valparaiso, 2168 W. U.S. 30 (Strack & VanTil).
