New service from USPS takes mail delivery to the next level

The United States Postal Service (USPS) is introducing a new way to interact with mail during its journey from post office to mailbox. Informed Delivery, as described by USPS, is a free digital service that provides customers with previews of their incoming mail to create an “omnichannel experience,” not just a regular delivery.

Customers can sign up for Informed Delivery if they are interested in taking their mailing to the next level. Benefits of this service include sender-to-receiver engagement as well as digital previews of the outside of parcels accessible on any type of mobile device. Through this, users are involved in the delivery process cost-free.

Notifications regarding Informed Delivery will be sent to users' email inbox or their account portal, which will include updates, photos, and messages about their incoming mail. There, users will also be able to engage with any virtual points of access provided by the sender. These can include website links, discount codes, or anything companies who partner with USPS want to contribute to the service.

Donna Flanagin, owner of Flanagin’s Bulk Mail Service, expressed that Informed Delivery is a feature that assists both those who send and those who receive mail.

“Informed Delivery can have advantages for certain companies, as well users, notifying them that their mail is on its way,” Flanagin said.

Digitalizing mail in a way that it can be accessed via the internet is an advancement for USPS. In today’s tech-savvy climate, Flanagin has noticed a pattern in its usage.

“The younger generation does seem to gravitate towards it more than the older generation as a way to see their mail before it arrives,” she said.

The overarching theme of Informed Delivery is to create convenience for senders and receivers of mail from anywhere across the globe. By utilizing Informed Delivery, it promotes digital marketing and mail tracking for USPS customers.

While notifications after the initial sign-up date may vary, the USPS typically begins sending notifications after three business days. These package notifications will then be accessible to users 15 days after mail delivery.
