New Valpo Shop: Thrifty & Chic

Tucked away in a downtown corner is a fabulous spot that you might just have to call your new favorite shop: Thrify & Chic. A small shop located off an alley where you will find just about anything at any time. The shop is operated by five local women whose goals are to not only repurpose and recycle useful items, but to provide an outlet for many of their creative ideas.

Please accept our invitation to attend our “Weekend Sales Event” being held on August 7th and 8th with extended hours from 9-4 and Sunday the 9th from noon till 4PM. We offer a most “unique resale experience”.  We are located at 256 W Indiana Ave, Valparaiso, IN, in the alley. This sales event will offer live music daily as well as refreshments. Come and see what we are all about. Be sure to tell us where you learned about us.

Barb Pullins and Kari Brockway specialize in refreshing and repainting old furniture. The two also collect and sell an eclectic mix of gypsy inspired junque' as well as architectural pieces. You will also find their hand painted artwork on glass and canvas. Outside services offered are furniture painting and interior re-design.

Another member, Kassy Wren-Denesuk writes:  I consider myself a true “treasure hunter”.  I live for the thrill of seeking and finding treasures. These treasures may come perfectly intact or they may need special love and attention which I gladly supply. In my role of “treasure hunter,” I also look for old glassware which I transform into garden art (or in other words, art work for your garden or landscaped areas). In fact, two of my creations were featured in this year’s Valparaiso Garden Walk. I am always looking for ways to recycle and repurpose items.  I am currently working on the reuse of teapots to make lamps and old china plates and cups to make wreaths and swags.

Jane Schreiner contributes many items and ideas to the shop and writes: I have a tendency to see beauty and possibility in things that others would simply throw away.  I also love to find diamonds in the rough and polish them up.  Sewing has been a love of mine that got buried for awhile, and I have recently started enjoying painting, a task which I once feared!  My participation in Thrifty & Chic has allowed me to explore and immerse myself in these "passions" with the payoff of having others take home the fruits of my labors of love.  Having four fabulous friends to share this shop with is frosting on the cake!

Linda Camp, another Thrifty & Chic contributor, adds beautiful handmade earrings using gems, beads, and crystals as well as woven wire bracelets. Her specialty involves the mixing and combining of color and light and texture. Her passion in stained glass had been temporarily placed on hold, but she will be up and producing much more in the near future. “I really enjoy the repurposing of old jewelry to create an updated and totally new look. Soon I should be running full speed ahead, and will provide the shop many unique and hand crafted pieces. Color and light really play off each other. A change in one creates a change in the other!”

Normal business hours are Friday and Saturday 11AM till 4PM, as well Sunday 12PM till 4PM. Always different, always unique. Cash and carry shopping. Stop in and see what we are all about! And bring a friend!
