NIPSCO’s Modernization Program Brings Improvements to Infrastructure and Customer Service

NIPSCOModernizationNIPSCO is on a continuous goal of providing energy to their customers as well as finding new and efficient ways to ensure that customers receive the power they need, making sure that every day brings improvements in how their services are delivered and provided to all of Northwest Indiana.

One way that NIPSCO is continually bringing improvement to both customer service and infrastructure is through their modernization program. This initiative spearheaded by NIPSCO takes a collective look at everything from equipment to delivery methods and brainstorms new methods and ideas to create more efficient and more economically viable way to best serve the customer by replacing and updating their older infrastructure as well as look for key areas where issues may arise and take action to prevent them before future problems can develop.

There are 5 key factors and goals that come with modernization, these consist of maintaining the overall safety and integrity of NIPSCO’s electric and natural gas systems, identifying and eliminating recurring system failures, providing the ability to continue delivering low-cost options to customers, supporting the creation of several hundred direct and indirect jobs and finally, supporting new business expansion.

"With modernization, this can include many aspects of how gas and electricity are delivered to customers," says NIPSCO External Communication Specialist Denise Rodriguez. "This can include anything from electric lines to gas pipes."

One of the examples Rodriguez pointed out was changing pipes with their old steel pipes used to transport gas now being changed to newer plastic pipes.

"By making the move from steel to plastic, this not only improves the flow of gas but ensures that it delivered in the most efficient and effective way so customers benefit," says Rodriguez. "We've had this project in progress since 2014 and many people from around the area are really happy that this infrastructure is developing and is currently happening."

Along with the pipe project, Northwest Indiana is also home to a multitude of modernization projects being conducted by NIPSCO in an effort to bring efficiency to the region.

These other projects include electrical upgrades in Merrillville and Gary, natural gas line upgrades in Highland and La Porte and even fiber optics projects in Michigan City. All of these projects, among others, are part of NIPSCO's ultimate goal of making Northwest Indiana's infrastructure one of the best in the nation and providing everyone living in Northwest Indiana a comfortable and safe living experience through gas and electric distribution.

"We are here for the clients and we are here to make sure they have the best experience," says Rodriguez. "From local projects to energy efficiency, we want the community to know that NIPSCO is here to serve them and provide the best experience possible, no matter what."
