NIPSCO to begin work on second phase of electric transmission upgrades in LaPorte County

Upgrade Project Bolsters Future System Reliability in Support of Coal Plant Retirement

Today NIPSCO announced the second phase of a multi-year project to upgrade portions of the electric transmission system, as part of the company’s plan to retire 100 percent of its remaining coal-fired generation by 2028 and transition to lower-cost, cleaner energy. This plan, called Your Energy, Your Future, is projected to cut carbon emissions by more than 90 percent by 2028 and generate more than $4 billion in cost savings over time.

The transmission project will begin construction in mid-November this year and is expected to last until May 2021. The generation transition upgrade includes retiring 99 existing electric transmission lattice towers to upgrade and install 84 new steel monopole towers, and installing 12 miles of new electric transmission line within existing pathways and new energy conductors to provide greater capacity to the system and support future reliability for all its customers.

Construction will take place in the existing rights-of-way between the Bosserman Electric Substation, east to County Line Road.

Area residents and business may experience additional truck traffic in the area and occasional lane and road closures. Signs and detour routes will be posted ahead of time. Flaggers will be on site directing traffic during construction hours.

Please exercise caution when traveling near any construction zone to ensure personal safety and the safety of construction crews working on this project.

NIPSCO will also continue to work with LaPorte County officials to minimize impact to customers in this area.

Similar reliability projects to support NIPSCO’s electric generation transition plan will be announced in the future.
