SHUFG-flyer-1$5,000 grant to support ecological and cultural diversity at historical Gary site

On Saturday, August 25, volunteers from NIPSCO’s Environmental Action Team (NEAT) will gather to lend a green thumb at the Stewart House Urban Farm and Gardens (SHUFG) work day. In addition to providing volunteer manpower, NIPSCO will award a $5,000 grant to the organization from the company’s Employee Environmental Challenge Fund. As an added fundraising opportunity, NIPSCO will match any donations the organization receives in the next 30 days up to $5,000.

The mission of Stewart House Urban Farm and Gardens, in conjunction with Christ United Methodist Church, is to transform an unused city block with historic significance in the Midtown section of Gary into a native plant and flower garden and sustainable food source for the community.

NIPSCO’s Environmental Action Team (NEAT) was formed by NIPSCO employees with a mission to provide environmental education and assistance with restoration efforts in our communities.

SHUFG-flyer-1“Our NEAT members are passionate about the environment and our local communities so we are proud to be involved with this project,” said Kelly Carmichael, director of environmental policy for NiSource (parent company of NIPSCO). “In addition to being an important environmental restoration initiative, the Stewart House site has a significant place in the city’s history. We look forward to seeing the future growth.”
