Northwest Health Brings Cardiothoracic Surgeon to Region

Northwest Health has welcomed cardiothoracic surgeon Sinan Simsir, MD, to Northwest
Medical Group. With more than 20 years of experience in treating complex heart and lung conditions,
Dr. Simsir brings advanced surgical expertise and a patient-centered approach to the region. He joined
Northwest Medical Group - Cardiothoracic Surgery office located at 85 E. U.S. Highway 6, Suite 310, in
Valparaiso.

Dr. Simsir’s expertise includes the use of ventricular assist devices (VAD), mitral valve repair, repair of
aortic dissections, and other open heart surgery.  He has held leadership roles in lung and heart transplant and advanced heart failure programs at several well-established cardiothoracic centers across
the country, including Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, and Advocate Christ Medical Center
in Oak Lawn. 

A pioneer in advanced cardiothoracic care and having founded lifesaving programs at leading medical
centers across the country, Simsir brings a wealth of experience to the region. At Cedars-Sinai Medical
Center, Dr. Simsir founded the VAD program that provides critical support for patients with advanced
heart failure. He also served as the founding Surgical Director of the lung transplantation program at
Advocate Christ Medical Center and the VAD program at Jersey Shore University Medical Center in
Neptune N.J. He founded the ECMO (extracorporeal membrane oxygenation) programs at Jersey Shore
University Medical Center and Riverside Medical Center in Kankakee as well.

Dr. Simsir pursued his medical education at Marmara University in Istanbul, Turkey, before completing
residencies in Cardiothoracic Surgery at the University of Massachusetts Hospital and General Surgery at the University of Minnesota. Dr. Simsir also trained as a fellow in Thoracic Transplantation and VAD and was an assistant professor at Duke University Medical Center. He is board-certified by the American
Board of Thoracic Surgery.

Known for his clear communication and compassionate care, Dr. Simsir takes time to explain procedures
in a way patients can understand, earning the trust of both patients and their families. Dr. Simsir treats
heart valve disorders, aortic aneurysms, coronary artery disease, heart failure, congenital heart defects,
lung cancer, lung disease/disorders, pleural disease, pneumothorax, mediastinal tumors, and chest wall
tumors.
