Ode to Cheers

The cheers theme song.  Sometimes you want to go where everybody knows your name.

It's Valpo.  Everyone has their favorite place to relax on a Friday or Saturday night.  In a big, small city like Valpo, when you're a 'regular' it's true- everyone really does know your name.

As seasons change, so do habits.  Some people only really venture out in the summer, some in the winter.  Some prefer one place in the summer, yet another in the winter. Habits can change due to the seasons weather, or seasons of the school year.  As Aug. 22 comes around, and students return to campus, we can see their habits change as the crowds increase at many area hang out spaces.

It's best not to be discouraged by the increased crowds though.  Think about what the students do for our community and local economy while they're here, all the people they help, places they shop and the restaurants they support.  Think what they will do for our local economy if they decide to stay in Valparaiso even after earning their degree.  Acting as the well trained professionals we will one day turn to, people who care and people who love to be here. Think of that, and then welcome them!

One thing I've learned from going out into the community speaking with Valparaiso citizens about what they love about Valpo, is that our community values the people here.  They value the friendliness that is shown by fellow community members.  They enjoy, that unlike in New York City, if you smile at a stranger on the street here, chances are they will smile back.

So if it's Passtimes, Duffy's, Northside or Inman's, know that no matter how far or how often you come, they're always glad you came- and so are we.

Cheers Theme Lyrics:

Making your way in the world today
Takes everything you've got;
Taking a break from all your worries
Sure would help a lot.
Wouldn't you like to get away?

All those night when you've got no lights,
The check is in the mail;
And your little angel
Hung the cat up by it's tail;
And your third fiance didn't show;

Sometimes you want to go
Where everybody knows your name,
And they're always glad you came;
You want to be where you can see,
Our troubles are all the same;
You want to be where everybody knows your name.

Roll out of bed, Mr. Coffee's dead;
The morning's looking bright;
And your shrink ran off to Europe,
And didn't even write;
And your husband wants to be a girl;

Be glad there's one place in the world
Where everybody knows your name,
And they're always glad you came;
You want to go where people know,
People are all the same;
You want to go where everybody knows your name.

Where everybody knows your name,
And they're always glad you came;
Where everybody knows your name,
And they're always glad you came;
