Opportunity Enterprises Honored Graduating Direct Support Professionals

Personal growth and continued education are not only important for clients at Opportunity Enterprises (OE), they are key components for staff as well.

That is why nine of OE’s direct support professionals (DSPs) graduated last week from Ivy Tech Community College with a Human Services Certificate.

The DSPs who completed the program through OE are Alex Evans, Sandy Gonzalez, Dianna Wantland, Roseanna Gray, Deloris Tillman, Gale McCoy, Wanda Denison, Bridgette Decker and Bridget Cletcher. A graduation ceremony took place on Friday, Aug. 14, at OE, 2801 Evans Ave. in Valparaiso.

The graduates are part of a class of DSPs from around the state who finished both an employer-based orientation program known as Foundations and the in-depth Ivy Tech classes. With the certificate, they will be eligible to apply for national credentials through the National Alliance of Direct Support Professionals.

The Foundations orientation and the Ivy Tech Human Services Certificate coursework are part of an overall statewide education and training initiative designed to increase the level of skills for DSPs who work with individuals with disabilities and their families.

“The DSP Initiative has been a total success for the staff involved and the people they serve,” OE President and CEO Gary Mitchell said. “This program has provided increased confidence, knowledge and expertise. We look forward to the continuation and expansion of this most worthwhile venture.”

DSPs support individuals with disabilities in a variety of ways.  At OE, they work with clients who participate in several programs and services, including Outsource, the organization’s light assembly workshop, SecureShred, Daily Living Skills and Art Enrichment. They also provide support to clients in OE’s group home and supported living programs and serve as respite care workers for families.

OE is currently hiring DSPs. Check out job openings at http://www.oppent.org/careers.php.
