The idea of home ownership is among the most basic of dreams for most Americans. For many people, a home is more than simply a place to sleep or store your belongings. A home means safety and security—a place where you can raise your children and build your future. Unfortunately, for too many people, the idea of owning their own home always seems just out of reach.

That's where Habitat for Humanity comes in, working with financial institutions, religious organizations and local businesses to help provide homes for those who otherwise may never be able to afford them.

“We try to help the people that can’t have a house of their own,” said Bernie Hohner, Project Manager for Habitat for Humanity of Porter County.

The latest home project spearheaded by Habitat for Humanity of Porter County is being built on a quiet cul-de-sac in Portage. It will be a 1,500 square foot residence with four bedrooms and two bathrooms. Hohner expects the project to be completed by Thanksgiving, with the family set to close and move in early December, just in time to spend the Christmas holidays in their new family home.

Hohner believes that it's important for people to understand that these are not homes for free. Future owners of Habitat for Humanity homes pay through the program’s “sweat equity,” where they spend 250 hours working on not only their home, but on homes for others in the program. Once their new home is built, they will close on it, purchasing the house for a very affordable amount.

Accomplishing this requires the assistance of local businesses. One such business helping Habitat for Humanity of Porter County fulfill their mission is Overhead Door Company of Northwest Indiana.

“Overhead Door is providing an insulated garage door at absolutely no charge to the project,” Hohner said. “That’s very beneficial to us. That door would have otherwise cost us more than $1,000. They are just great partners to work with on this project.”

Family-owned and operated for over 30 years, Overhead Door Company of Northwest Indiana values both their customers and their employees and seeks to prove an ideal customer service experience. They cultivate a fair proactive work environment of employees who are honest and dedicated to always putting our customers’ needs first. In addition, they invest themselves in their community.

“Overhead Door is always glad to help out. We’re always looking to give back to the community. Every time we do a door for Habitat for Humanity, we’re helping someone who needs it,” said Jeremy Ortiz, an installer for Overhead Door Company of Northwest Indiana.

Ortiz was proud to volunteer his time to install the family’s new garage door and is proud of his company’s commitment to helping others.

“Overhead Door is a great company to work for,” Ortiz said. “It’s like they’re family.”
