valpopoliceDue to the potential dangers from the predicted blizzard, the City of Valparaiso will be using Valparaiso High School’s Fieldhouse lobby as a warming shelter. The warming shelter will be available for community members needing a place to get warm during the storm.

The City of Valparaiso has an ordinance regarding a snow emergency. A snow emergency can be issued when 2” or more of snow falls. Vehicles parked on main thoroughfares throughout the city after a snow emergency is declared risk being impounded by police. Main throughways must remain open for emergency vehicles during major incidents. Other residents are encouraged to not park on city streets, if possible, this will assist the street department in clearing side streets. Any vehicle that blocks a roadway within the city will be at risk to be impounded by police. Main thoroughfares and emergency routes will be cleared first within the city.

Please refrain from calling the police department for informational purposes during the storm. Media sources such as, the Times Newspaper (website) and Indiana 105.5 will be broadcasting updated information and all breaking news will be provided to them as it occurs. All road conditions and closings will be available through these media outlets.

Observe the one-day delay in trash/recycling pick-ups for Wednesday and Thursday. Please refrain from toting your cans to the street as it will impede snow removal. Check the city’s website www.valpo.us for additional information about your pick-up day if needed.
