PNC American Sign Language Club Coffeehouse on January 27

asl-coffeehouseThe Purdue University North Central American Sign Language Club will host its first ASL Coffeehouse of the semester on Friday, Jan 27, from 6 to 9 p.m. at Cornucopia Coffee Company, 210 Lincolnway, Valparaiso.

At 7 p.m. there will be an interactive group activity for all to enjoy.

The event is open to ASL students as well as community members and children are welcome to attend with a parent or adult. This is a fun, casual event for all to enjoy through participation or as an observer.

Participants are asked to use ASL providing an ideal opportunity to practice ASL to better communicate with friends, co-workers or family members. Coffee, food and drink may be ordered throughout the evening.

The coffeehouses regularly feature presenters. Joanna Witulski, PNC limited term lecturer in American Sign Language, noted that almost all of the presenters at past coffeehouses have been deaf and present a variety of occupations, experiences and backgrounds to share with coffeehouse participants - both deaf and hearing.

"We are not a monotone minority, we are as varied as the populace outside of our culture/group," said Witulski. "This is one of the purposes of the coffeehouses." Past presenters have included a chef, photographer, community specialist, animal sanctuary operator, teacher and a coach, among others.

Upcoming coffeehouses this semester will be: Feb 10, March 16, April 20 and May 18. All will be at Cornucopia Coffee Company from 6 to 9 p.m. and will feature a guest speaker, group activity or game.
