The Purdue University North Central Dual Credit/Concurrent Enrollment program allows qualifying area high school students to earn Purdue University credits while they are still attending their usual high school classes.

"Students and their parents will see significant savings on tuition through this program," said Sue Wilson, PNC director of School Partnerships.

Tuition for courses included on the State Priority Dual Credit Course List will cost $25 per credit hour. Tuition for courses not on the Priority List will cost $101.55 per credit hour as determined by the Purdue University Board of Trustees. Students who qualify for free and reduced lunch will receive 100 percent tuition assistance and will pay no tuition.

In comparison, the PNC undergraduate in-state tuition rate for the 2011 - 2012 academic year is $209.40 per credit hour, plus fees and books.

"Students who take college courses while in high school can enter college with the confidence of having successfully completed college level work," said Wilson. "Students who enter college with a number of college credits earned while in high school have a greater rate of graduating/completing their degrees in four years. They also have opportunities to include extra internships for experience and networking, study abroad, double major, or add extra minors."

Students earning credits through the PNC Dual Credit/Concurrent Enrollment Program are not required to attend PNC or Purdue after high school graduation. Their credits may be applied at universities throughout Indiana and the nation.

The PNC Dual Credit/Concurrent Enrollment Program is open to juniors and seniors who have completed at least four semesters of high school. The admission criteria also requires that students have at least two of the following: 3.0 GPA, rank in the top one-third of their high school class, have a 1500 SAT or 21 ACT score. If a student only meets one of the criteria, a teacher or counselor recommendation will be considered, said Wilson.

Participating local high school Guidance Offices have the complete list of courses offered by the Purdue North Central Dual Credit/Concurrent Enrollment Program. Currently, 24 of the 37 courses that PNC offers for dual credit are on the Priority List and qualify for the greatly reduced tuition. Many dual credit courses satisfy core requirements for college majors.

Information about the application process is available in the high school Guidance Offices as well.

The deadline for applying and registering for the Dual Credit/Concurrent Enrollment Program is Aug. 31. Information is available on the PNC website at www.pnc.edu, and searching "dual credit." Information about course transferability within Indiana is available at www.TransferIn.net
