The Purdue University North Central Latin American Studies minor and the Multicultural Club will host a visit to campus by Dr. Sterling Evans, University of Oklahoma professor of History, on Nov. 15 and 16.
On Tuesday, Nov. 15, he will give a lecture to the Environmental History class, taught by Dr. Kenneth Kincaid, assistant professor of History.
On Wednesday, Nov. 16 from noon to 1 p.m., in Library-Student-Faculty Building Assembly Hall, Room 02, he will give the public presentation, "Nothing New about NAFTA: Globalization and North American History." This event is open to the public and refreshments will be served.
The program is being sponsored by mini-grants from the Chancellor's Diversity Fund: Diversity Makes a Difference and from Student Services Diversity Initiative Mini Grant.
Evans is author of the book, "Bound in Twine: The History and Ecology of the Henequen-Wheat Complex for Mexico and the American and Canadian Plains," which won the Agricultural History Society 2008 Theodore Saloutos Best Book Prize.
His interest in the environmental history of Latin America prompted him to write, "The Green Republic: A Conservation History of Costa Rica." His most recent project is the book, "Damming Sonora: Water, Agriculture, and Environmental Change in Northwest Mexico."
