PNC International and Multicultural Education Week

Purdue University North Central will celebrate PNC International and Multicultural Education Week April 12 through 17 with a series of activities on campus. purdue-north-centralThe events are free and open to the public.

The week opens on Monday, April 12 at 10:30 a.m. in Library-Student-Faculty Building Assembly Hall, Room 02 with guest speaker Judy Lorimer. Lorimer will speak about the "Build a School in Africa" program, an organization dedicated to building schools and bringing education opportunities to African children. Lorimer, a retired kindergarten teacher, is project director for "Build a School in Africa" and is responsible for the construction of five new schools in Africa.

At noon Multicultural Club members will present samples of a sweet potato puree desert outside Library-Student-Faculty Building, Room 144.

On Tuesday, April 13, at 11 a.m. in Library-Student-Faculty Building, Room 144, the presentation, "Multiculturalism and Nursing" will include Bobbi Herron, assistant professor of Nursing, speaking on community health in Egypt and Angela Schooley, assistant professor of Nursing, speaking generally about multiculturalism and nursing.

At noon Multicultural Club members will present samples of a mango custard desert outside Library-Student-Faculty Building, Room 144.

Also on Tuesday, April 13, at 2 p.m. in Library-Student-Faculty Building, Room 144, Judy Jacobi, assistant vice chancellor of Marketing and Community relations, will present "A Taste of Judiasm." Traditional refreshments will be served.

On Wednesday April 14 at 11 a.m. in Technology Building, Room 134, artist Mel Theobald will discuss the "Modest Introduction to Kuna Culture," exhibit at Purdue North Central. This collection of molas, beaded necklaces, nuchus and medicine pot is an introduction to the culture of the Kuna tribes.

At noon Multicultural Club members will present samples of Arroz con leche desert outside Library-Student-Faculty Building, Room 144.

At 2 p.m. in Library-Student-Faculty Building, Room 144 , Kenneth Kincaid, assistant professor of History, will talk about study abroad opportunities in Peru and Nipul Patel, assistant professor of Computer and Information Technology, will discuss an opportunity that he is developing to study abroad in India.

At 3 p.m. in Library-Student-Faculty Building Assembly Hall, Room 02, PNC student Jamison Nutter will demonstrate Brazilian and Asia martial arts techniques in the form of stick-fighting.

On Thursday, April 15, Beth Rudnick, PNC academic advisor, will present Mitakuye Oyasin (It is a Sioux expression that means "We Are One") that will detail on her work at Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in South Dakota.

At noon Thursday and Friday Multicultural Club members will present desert outside in Library-Student-Faculty Building, Room 144.

Saturday morning at noon we will have a kite-flying festival on the PNC lawn on the east side of campus. PNC faculty members will be on hand to lead a discussion on kite-flying around the world and what it means.

Guests are welcome to come to campus to fly kites. Kites will be available or guests may bring their own kites to enjoy. Following the kite fly, there will be a Rhythms and Recipes event from 2 to 4 in Library-Student-Faculty Building Assembly Hall, Room 02. This will include Peruvian and Indian dance and Chinese Tai Chi.

Afterward, there will be a buffet of foods from around the world.

  • Monday at 1 p.m. in Library-Student-Faculty Building Assembly Hall, Room 02 - the on-line film "Togu Na and Cheko."
  • Tuesday at 1 p.m. in Library-Student-Faculty Building, Room 144 - the on-line film "Yachaj."
  • Wednesday at 1 p.m. in Technology, Room 134 - the on-line film "Bollywood."
  • Thursday at 1 p.m. in Technology, Room 134 - the on-line film "Incident at Oglala."
  • Friday at 1 p.m. Technology, Room 134 - the on-line film "The Kiterunner."
