PNC, Libraries Present “Arbitrage” Screenings

ArbitrageTwo showings of the movie "Arbitrage" will be offered through a collaboration between Purdue University North Central's Odyssey Arts and Cultural Events Series, LaPorte County Public Library and Michigan City Public Library. Both showings are free and open to the public.

It will be shown on Sunday, Feb. 17 at 2 p.m. at the Michigan City Public Library, 100 E. Fourth St. and on Tuesday, Feb. 26 at 6 p.m. at the LaPorte County Public Library, 904 Indiana Ave., LaPorte.

The film is rated R for language, violent images and drug references.

"Arbitrage" stars Richard Gere, who plays Robert Miller, charming hedge-fund manager who made it to the top through his questionable professional and personal actions. Susan Sarandon is his wife. While Gere presents his character in a warm, charming and fascinating way, Robert Miller is in actuality an amoral man who is willing to commit massive financial fraud, keep a high-maintenance mistress and walk away from a car accident that was his fault. He's hidden a $400 million debt from his company, in spite of the fact that his daughter is CFO.

"The New York Times" described "Arbitrage" as "sleek entertainment" and a "fairy tale masquerading as a tragedy" and noted that "everything looks seductively right" in this film about the all-encompassing power of money.

This thriller is writer-director Nicholas Jarecki's first feature film. Roger Ebert noted, "He proves himself a master craftsman. I felt urgently involved. 'Arbitrage' is an example of good writing and sound construction."
