Place-Beyond-the-PinesThe movie "The Place Beyond the Pines" will be shown Sunday, Nov. 17 at 2 p.m. at the Michigan City Public Library, 100 E. Fourth St., thanks to collaboration among the Purdue University North Central Odyssey Arts and Cultural Events Series, the Michigan City Library and the LaPorte County Public Library. The showing is free and open to the public.

The film is rated R for crime, punishment, drugs and swearing.

"The Place Beyond the Pines" stars Ryan Gosling as Luke, a tattoo-covered, daredevil motorcyclist. Eva Mendes is Romina, the mother of Luke's son, who has moved on and is involved with a new man. As the movie unfolds, Luke devises the twisted idea that he can support Romina and his son with the money that he can grab by robbing banks. He sees himself as an outlaw with a noble cause.

The film is separated into three separated acts, taking place over a span of 15 years, with each one taking a distinctly different turn. The film explores themes of class, manhood and the odd twists of fate that envelope the handful of characters in the film. Bradley Cooper, Ben Mendelsohn and Ray Liotta also have featured roles.

Richard Roper of "The Chicago Sun-Times" gave the film four stars. He noted that this is a "film that touches greatness." He compliments director Derek Cianfrance, stating, "The music, the cinematography, the acting choices, the daring plot leaps - not a single element is timid or safe."
