PNC Nursing Students Present Health Fair at LaPorte HS

Womens-Heart-DiseasePurdue University North Central Community Health Nursing students will present an "Above the Influence" health fair for the junior and senior students of La Porte High School on Tuesday, March 26. This motivational fair will address issues related to career choices, college education, healthy choices, drug and alcohol use and abuse as well as other pertinent health related topics.

The fair will include the 50-minute live presentation theater show, "STAND UP! Change Teen Statistics." This powerful prevention program targets teen issues on a peer-to-peer level while delivering meaningful statistics and information. The show engages the audience, raises awareness, encourages healthy resolutions and actions and provides resources for help.

The PNC Nursing students are presenting the fair under the direction of Peggy Rose, assistant professor of Nursing and in cooperation with La Porte High School Principal Greg Handel; Assistant Principal Chris Alber; LaPorte High School student government representatives and advisor Erica White; Micki Webb, MSW, of the La Porte County Drug Free Partnership and Joseph Bunch, MSW, counselor with the La Porte County Dorothy S. Crowley Juvenile Services Center.

The fair will also include a variety of vendors and booths that will address the real-world issues that high school students face, including career choices and college selection. Students will have an opportunity to visit the interactive booths and displays, pick up information, ask questions and participate in the learning activities and demonstrations.

Many booths will offer give-away items. An HD color Nook and a variety of gift certificates and awards will be given as door prizes for all participating students.

"We are grateful to have another opportunity to partner with both Micki Webb and Joseph Bunch," said Peggy Rose. "The outreach efforts of both the LaPorte Juvenile Center and the Drug Free Partnership demonstrate how extending beyond the traditional walls of an office to reach out into the community creates opportunities for collaboration and service. Schools represent a significant force in meeting the complex and challenging health care needs of adolescents today. Health fairs meet these needs.
